This region includes Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrg yzstan and Tajikistan, as well as Mongolia and western China (Tib et autonomous regions, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang Uighur and Ningxia and the provinces of Qinghai and Gansu). The region is an area of over 10.5 million square km, is very sparsely populated - population of around 120 million inhabitants (1990).
